It’s that big weekend of the year with both Football codes (NRL and AFL) Grand Finals being held in Sydney and in Melbourne. Saturday afternoon we’ll see the West Coast Eagles vie for the Premiership Cup against the Hawthorn Hawks at the MCG in Melbourne. If Hawthorn win it would be their third Premiership in succession. On Sunday the Brisbane Broncos play the North Queensland Cowboys at ANZ Stadium in Sydney to win the 2015 NRL Telstra Premiership.
In Melbourne the 2015 Toyota AFL Premiership Season comes to a close and the Royal Australian Mint will be there to make their mark on the occasion. Outside the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), in Yarra Park, the Mint will have their mobile coin press striking M counterstamps onto their new “Custodians of the Game” AFL $1 coin. The press will be in action from Wednesday Sep 30th to Saturday Oct 3rd game day and the cost for a coin is $15.
In Sydney from Thursday October 1st to Saturday 3rd the Royal Australian Mint will have their second mobile coin press in the action. In Darling Harbour at NRL Nation you can strike an S counterstamp on the new “Moments that Matter” NRL $1 coin, again for $15 each.
The Mint advises that attending these events is the only way to secure a counterstamped coin and there’s also another surprise for coin collecting footy fans. Buy any counterstamped coin at either event and you’ll get an entry form to go into the draw to win one of 500 coins with the finalists team colours. Buy multiple coins and get multiple entries! Winners will be drawn back at the Mint in Canberra on Wednesday October 7th and winners will be notified after that date. Coins will be sent out to those winners in November.
